Diaper noun; A basic garment for infants consisting of a folded cloth or other absorbent material drawn up between the legs and fastened about the waist.
 
Pre-fold Fabric folded, doubled over and sewn.  Resulting in three panels; a thick middle panel with two thinner side panels.
Examples: Chinese prefolds, European prefolds, Indian prefolds, Hemp prefolds
 
Flat Fold A large rectangle or square thin, single layer of fabric used for diapering by folding and pinning.
Examples: Birdseye flats, Gauze flats, Gerber flats, old time Curity flats (bought out by Gerber)
 
Contoured An hourglass shaped diaper. It requires no folding or pinning and is used with wrap style covers.
Examples: Rainbow, Kissaluvs contours, Bumkins Foldover Contoured
 
Fitted Shaped and contoured with elastic and having closures of Velcro or snaps.  This diaper is made of all absorbent fabric requirs a cover to be waterproof.
Examples: Kissaluvs fitted, Growing Greens, Snappi fitted
 
Pocket A waterproof cover and a stay dry fabric, usually fleece or suede cloth, sewn together with an opening in the back.  Then an absorbent insert or pre-fold is placed inside the opening between the two layers.
Example: Knicker nappies, Happy Heiny’s, Fuzzi Bunz, Wonderoos
 
All In One (AIO) A one-piece diaper. An absorbent diaper and waterproof cover sewn together as one.
Example: Bumkins All-in-One, Kushies Ultras
 
Cover noun; A protective overlay.
 
Wrap Waterproof cover that wraps an unfastened diaper in place, that closes with snaps or Velcro.
Synonym: Cover
 
Cover Waterproof or water resistant fabric with elastic made to fit over diapers, to keep clothing dry. The diaper being covered may or may not be fastened.  Fabrics being used are Polyurethane laminate (PUL), fleece, wool, nylon and others.
Synonym: Wrap
 
Pull On Pants Waterproof cover with simply two elastic leg openings and elastic waist pulled over a fastened diaper.
Synonym: Plastic pants, Rubber pants
Examples: Dappi pull on pants, Alexis Feather-lite, Bummis pull on Whisper pant, Gerber vinyl pull on pants
 
Accessories noun; Something non-essential but desirable that contributes to complete a diapering system.
 
Doublers Extra layers of fabric placed in a diaper to increase absorbency.
 
Liner 1. Non-absorbent layer used to keep the baby dry. 
2. Disposable layer, that looks like a fabric softener dryer sheet, used for mess-free poop removal.

 
Insert Special made stuffings for a pocket diaper.  They are a trimmer alternative to stuffing with prefolds.
Example: Happy Heiny’s Stuffins, Micro Inserts, Joey Bunz
 
Dritz Pins A good brand of all metal diaper pins that stays sharp and has locking heads, for safety.
 
Snappi A T-shaped stretchy rubber band with teeth, used to fasten a diaper at the sides and crotch.  An alternative to diaper pins.
 
Clips Two small devices with teeth used to grip or hold cloth diapers on a baby without using pins.

Aplix Longer lasting form of Velcro.
Synonym: Touch tape, Velcro, Hook & Loop
 
Dry Pail A diaper pail-ing method, where dirty and wet diapers are placed in an empty pail until washday.
Positive: Lighter to carry, less messy and no drowning hazard.
 
DSQ Diaper Service Quality. Meaning diaper services, which wash a lot of diapers over and over and over, could use these diapers and  they shouldn’t fall apart and are very absorbent.  High quality prefolds.
Antonym: Gerber or store brand diapers
 
The Diaper Hyena™ - (hy-ae-na) 1.) One that stalks WAHM (Work-At-Home-Mom) diaper auctions and IN-STOCK online diaper stores with the intention of snatching/sniping a coveted diaper with either a reservation, a winning bid or being the first to add a newly posted diaper to their shopping cart BEFORE a fellow 'hyena' gets it!  2.)  One who lives vicariously through the coveted purchases of other diaper hyenas.  3.)  One who stalks the UPS, USPS or FedEx man for the latest cotton comforts (a.k.a. 'fluffy mail') for her cub's bum.  4.) One who knows the websites of over 100 cloth diaper sewing WAHMs by heart or at the very least has them saved as a 'Favorite' in her browser.  5.)  One who does not check their own underwear before leaving the house, but always makes sure that their cub has on a cute diaper just in case anyone should happen to witness a diaper change.  6.) One who will change a perfectly clean diaper if there is a slight chance of scoring a cloth diaper convert with the look of today's 'modern' cloth diapers.  7.) One who comes away from the pediatrician's office disappointed if no mention whatsoever was made regarding the newly received All-In-One Diaper on baby's bum.  8.)  One who walks/talks/dreams about cloth diapers.  9.) One who has enough to say about cloth diapering that she can register over 11,000 posts on a diapering board talking about it!

Laundry Tabs An extra piece of Velcro sewn in the back of a diaper cover, by the tabs, used to fold the tabs on to.   This prevents the Velcro from sticking to other things in the wash.
 
PUL Polyurethane Laminate. A flexible coating applied to fabric or sandwiched between two layers of fabric to produce a waterproof fabric used in making diaper covers.
 
Repelling 1.When a diaper is incapable of absorbing very well.
Example: New Unbleached Prefolds
2. When urine does not wick through fleece, but instead rolls off the top. Can be caused by build up of detergent, hard water or from using fabric softeners.

 
Unbleached A diaper made from natural, unprocessed fibers that still contain the natural oils, waxes and color.
Synonym: Natural
Antonym: Bleached
 
WAHM Work At Home Mom. Ladies that make and/or sell diapers, covers and other items, from their homes, allowing them to stay at home with their children and still produce an income or support a hobby.
 
Wet Pail A diaper pail-ing method, that uses a water filled bucket to store wet and/or dirty diapers in until washday.
Negative: Heavy, messy and can pose as a drowning hazzard to children.
 
Wicking Moisture transferring from one fabric to another.
Positive: Fleece is used to wick moisture from baby’s bottom to absorbent  diaper.
Negative: Moisture that is transferred through the diaper cover on to baby’s clothes.
